There are 4 main reasons why you should have a custom logo, even if you’re a small business owner. These reasons are Branding, Attention, Trust and Recognition. You want to establish yourself as a trustworthy business that your clients can easily recognize and will gain you their repeat business.
Branding
What’s the first thing you think of when you see the Nike Swoosh? You either think “Nike” or “Just Do It”. Without even seeing the business name of Nike, you automatically know who they are, and what they stand for. The same goes for your business. You want people to associate all that makes your business fabulous and all that it stands for, with one single visual concept.
Attention
You’re not the only one doing what it is you do. There are plenty of accessory designers, natural hair bloggers, and fashion stylists out there. Who are you, and what makes you so special? What is helping you stand apart from the rest of your competitors? Before you’re a business owner, you’re a consumer right? Think about the kinds of things that attract you to certain brands. Consumers are also looking for something that is eye catching and appealing. I know I’m a sucker for pretty packaging. You may have the most delicious cupcakes or the best smelling body products, but if it’s not presented properly, your potential clients may not want to try.
Trust
Investing in your business shows your clients that you are serious about what you do. Imagine you went to an event and someone handed you cheaply printed business cards with some clip art; you know what I’m talking about. Not knocking anyone trying to save a dollar, but you can get some well designed business cards for only $10-$20 (www.nextdayflyers.com). If you don’t take your business seriously, most of the time, your potential clients won’t either. Clients want to feel like they’re getting a return on their investment and feel like you’re a reputable business. Your logo is the face of your business and says EVERYTHING about it.
Recognition
This is all the above three things rolled into one. You want your clients to feel like you’re a brand that has quality, is trustworthy that will stand the test of time. If they see your products in a cute little boutique, they should be able to easily recognize you from across the room or your products should peak some interest. You want that recognition to leave a sweet taste in their mouth, not a sour one.
I know personally as a small business owner, that it can be expensive to start a small business. On the flip side, the small investment up front, can definitely grow into more clients down the line. Eventually if you want to take your small business to the next level, you’ll have to invest in a great brand identity.
